Washer Water Inlet Valve: Signs, Error Codes, Part Cost and How to Fix It
Water dripping into the drum, wet clothes after the spin, or an IE / F8 E1 code: what it means and what we do about it in Tampa Bay
Quick answer
If your washer lets a little water into the drum while it is switched off, or the clothes come out of the spin still wet, the water inlet valve is the first thing to suspect. A valve that cannot close all the way lets water creep in. If it will not open, or opens too little, the drum fills slowly or not at all and the washer shows a fill code such as IE or F8 E1.
In Florida the usual cause is the water itself: fine sand and debris get past the valve screens and settle on the rubber seals. The part is not expensive, and on many jobs it is fitted on the first visit.
Signs of a failing water inlet valve
- Water in the drum while the washer is off. Leave it unused for a week or two and you will see a puddle at the bottom of the drum. The valve is dripping through.
- Clothes are damp after the spin cycle. The load was spun dry, but water kept trickling in while it sat. You end up running a second spin before the dryer.
- Slow filling, or no filling at all. The valve or its screen is blocked, or a valve coil has failed.
- A fill error on the display. IE on LG, F8 E1 on Whirlpool, and the same codes on Kenmore washers built by those makers (see the table below).
- Buzzing or hammering when the water comes on. Worn valve or debris in the valve.
Error codes that point to the water supply
Kenmore does not build its own washers, so the code on the display depends on who made the machine. Check the model number on the label: 796 models are usually built by LG, 110 models by Whirlpool. Other prefixes have their own manuals.
| Code and platform | What the maker says | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| IE: LG and Kenmore Elite (796) | The tub did not fill to the right level in the set time | Faucets fully open, hoses connected and not kinked, inlet screens clean. If that does not help, the water supply valve may be faulty |
| FE: LG and Kenmore Elite (796) | Overfilling, usually a faulty water valve | Close both taps, drain the trapped water, restart. If FE returns, the valve needs repair |
| AE: LG and Kenmore Elite (796) | Leak detected inside the machine, the safety switch has stopped the cycle | Check the inlet hoses for loose connections or cuts, unplug for 60 seconds, restart |
| F8 E1 or LO FL: Whirlpool and Kenmore 110 | Low water flow, not enough incoming water detected | Hot and cold taps open, hoses straight, no anti-flood devices, inlet screens clean, supply hoses flowing freely |
Sources: Whirlpool front load error codes (Whirlpool product help) and the LG front load error code list (LG support). Makers note that their lists may not cover every model, so check the manual for your exact model number. A code is a starting point: confirm the fault before you buy a part.
Why valves fail in Florida
Each inlet valve has a small mesh screen to catch dirt. Our water is hard and, in houses with no filter at the main, it carries fine particles. Some pass through the screen and stick to the rubber seal. The valve then cannot shut tight and water seeps in. The same thing happens in dishwashers, which use similar valves.
It is not a question of old or new. A machine that is five to seven years old is typical, but sediment can kill a valve sooner.
Real jobs: Bradenton and Tampa
LG washer, Bradenton: clothes still wet after the spin, and a lid that would not always lock
| Brand | LG washer, about 5 to 7 years old |
|---|---|
| City | Bradenton, FL |
| Complaint | Water seeped into the drum after the cycle and the clothes were wet again. The customer ran a second spin before using the dryer |
| What failed | Water valve assembly (part 5221EA1008F), plus a damaged lid hinge (part AGM73832001) that stopped the lid locking every time |
| Visits | 2: the valve on the first visit, the hinge three days later |
| Water valve assembly | $142 |
| Lid hinge | $53 |
| Labor | $180 |
| Total | $375 |
The valve. It is a multi-section valve, one section for each rinse zone, with a screen in each. Fine debris had got through and stopped the seals from closing, so water crept into the drum after the washer finished. My tech had the valve on the truck and replaced it on the spot. The washer worked that day.
The hinge. The plastic part of the lid hinge was damaged, so the lid sometimes missed the lid lock. It is not a stock part, so we ordered it. It arrived in three days, and we came back, fitted it and tested the lid lock and the water supply again.
The same fault shows up on dishwashers, and for the same reason: sediment on the seal.
GE washer, Tampa: leaking from the bottom, and the cause was a hose
| Brand | GE washing machine |
|---|---|
| City | Tampa, FL |
| Complaint | Water leaking from the bottom of the washer |
| What failed | Damaged water supply line |
| Work | Supply line replaced, inlet filters cleaned, full cycle run to confirm no leaks |
| Visits | 1 |
| Total | $160 (parts and labor) |
The complaint. The customer noticed the washing machine leaking from the bottom.
What the technician found. After a thorough inspection, the source was a damaged water supply line. The water was coming from the hose that feeds the machine, not from the tub or the drain.
What was done. The supply line was replaced and the inlet filters were cleaned. The technician then ran the washer through a full cycle and it came through without a leak. The repair was finished on the same visit.
The supply side of a washer has more than one weak point: the hose, the couplings, the inlet screens and the valve. This one was the hose. More jobs on our Tampa washer repair page.
What the repair costs
From the Bradenton invoice. Parts and labor vary by model, so the price for yours is confirmed after the diagnosis.
| Item | Part number | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Water valve assembly, LG washer | 5221EA1008F | $142.00 |
| Lid hinge | AGM73832001 | $53.00 |
| Labor | – | $180.00 |
The service call is $79, free when you go ahead with the repair. For comparison, a GE washer in Tampa that leaked from a damaged supply line was $160, parts and labor, in one visit. A valve repair is a fraction of the price of a new washer, so on a machine under about ten years old with a sound drum and motor, we usually advise repairing. How to fix it
Start with the cheap checks. Unplug the washer and turn off both water taps behind it before you touch a hose.
-
Rule out the simple causes
Pull the washer out. Check that both taps are fully open and the hoses are not kinked. Disconnect each hose and look at the small mesh screen in the washer’s inlet: if it is clogged, rinse it and put it back. A clogged screen slows the fill; it does not cause water to creep in when the washer is off.
-
Confirm the valve is the problem
If water collects in the drum while the washer is off and the taps are open, close the taps. If the water stops, the valve is not sealing. If the washer will not fill at all, a control board or a lid switch can be the cause too. A technician tests the valve coil with a meter before any part is bought.
-
Replace the valve assembly
Find the model number on the label, and order the valve for that exact model by part number. Open the cabinet (the panel depends on the model), photograph the wiring, and disconnect the connectors, the outlet hoses and the mounting screws. Fit the new valve, reconnect everything, then open the taps slowly and look for leaks. Run a short cycle and check the connections again.
-
Check for a second fault
The Bradenton washer also had a damaged lid hinge, and it only showed up in the diagnosis. After the valve, check the lid or door lock, the hoses and the drain, so you do not need a second visit.
-
Stop it happening again
Fit a sediment filter on the water line where it enters the house, and clean the hose screens once a year.
When to call a technician
- You cannot tell which valve fits your model.
- The washer still fills or drips after the new valve.
- There is water near the wiring or the control board.
- An FE or AE code keeps coming back.
- You are not comfortable working with the washer open.

Washer water inlet valve: questions we get
What does a washer water inlet valve do?
It opens to let hot and cold water into the drum and closes tightly when the fill is done. Most washers have a double or triple valve for the different water lines.
Why is there water in my washer drum when it is off?
The inlet valve is not closing all the way, usually because of sediment on its rubber seal. Close the taps: if the water stops, it is the valve.
Can a leaking inlet valve flood my house?
In our experience it seeps slowly into the drum. The FE overfill code and AE leak code on LG washers are warnings to act on, so shut the taps and call.
What does IE mean on my Kenmore washer?
On a Kenmore Elite built by LG, IE means the tub is not filling in time. Check the taps, the hoses and the inlet screens first. If they are fine, the valve may be faulty.
What does F8 E1 mean?
On Whirlpool-built washers, including Kenmore 110 models, it means the washer is not detecting enough incoming water. Check the taps, the hoses and the inlet screens, and avoid anti-flood devices on the supply line.
How much does it cost to replace a washer water inlet valve?
On our Bradenton LG job the valve assembly was $142 and labor $180. A second repair, a lid hinge, was $53. The price for your washer is confirmed after the diagnosis.
Do you charge for the service call?
Not when you go ahead with the repair. You pay $79 only if you hear the diagnosis and the price and decide against the work.
Can I replace the valve myself?
On some models it is a simple job, but you must unplug the washer, shut off the water and order the right part. A wrong part or a loose hose causes a leak, and a second fault is easy to miss.
