Insufficient Ice Production

Description and Troubleshooting of Problems

Ice Machine Is Dirty

Ice machines from all brands and models need to be cleaned every 4 to 6 months, depending on how often they are used. If you haven’t cleaned your ice machine in a while, that could be the cause of many problems and malfunctions. Ice machines use a lot of water that flows through the water valve, drain pump, spray, and so on. Over time, the water creates buildup, which clogs up all the parts, tubes, and sprays, leading to improper functioning. Our technicians often find that the spray nozzle, which delivers water to the evaporator where it freezes to make ice, is clogged by about 80%. This restricts water flow, resulting in significantly less ice production. This issue applies to all parts that come into contact with water; they all get clogged over time. To properly clean an ice machine, you need to take it apart and clean all the elements that contact water, including sensors, tubes, plastic parts, the evaporator, spray nozzle, and drain pump. It’s important to use a special cleaning solution designed for ice machines to effectively remove buildup and grime. Using the cleaning function on the ice machine alone isn’t enough for a thorough clean; it can only help maintain cleanliness, but for a proper cleaning, everything needs to be disassembled and each part cleaned. Often, if an ice machine runs without cleaning for a long time, other parts can fail, and cleaning won’t fix the issue, meaning you’ll need to replace the non-working parts. Cleaning an ice machine typically takes about 2 hours.

Faulty Fan Motor

The fan motor is responsible for cooling the refrigerant and the compressor. If it’s not working or isn’t spinning fast enough over time, this can lead to ice production being significantly reduced. If the fan motor doesn’t start at all, it can prevent ice from being produced because the water won’t freeze. In most brands of ice machines, if ice isn’t produced after a few cycles or for an extended period, they will shut down and display an error about improper operation. If a technician notices issues with the fan motor during diagnostics, the only solution will be to replace it. Additionally, when replacing the fan motor, it’s important to clean the radiator, as it often gets clogged and can restrict airflow, which can also cause the ice machine to malfunction.

Clogged Water Valve

Due to the increased water usage, the water valve is responsible for supplying water to the ice machine, and over time, buildup can occur inside it, reducing water pressure. Depending on the brand and model of the ice machine, it may continue to operate without water, which can lead to other components failing, or it may stop working altogether and display an error. Even if you use a water filter, the water valve can still get clogged over time, as our experience shows. Often, the solution to this problem is simply to clean the system and the water valve, and everything will work fine. However, in cases where the machine hasn’t been cleaned for a long time, the water valve may stop functioning, and you’ll need to replace it. It’s also crucial for the water line connected to the ice machine to have sufficient pressure for it to operate. Depending on the brand and model, this pressure can range from 2 to 4 bar.

Water Level Is Not Working

In home ice machines from brands like GE, Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Blaze, Vevor, Scotsman, and Sub-zero, there’s a set time for filling the water reservoir—typically around 2 minutes—because there isn’t a sensor that measures the water level. This means that much less water enters the reservoir than it should. This is problematic because, in this case, the ice machine doesn’t realize there’s no water and will continue to operate without it. This can damage the circulation pump, which should only work when there’s water. In commercial ice machines, especially larger ones from brands like Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, and U-Line, there is a water level sensor that fills the reservoir until it’s full and then stops. However, these sensors can accumulate buildup, which may prevent them from sending accurate readings. Often, after cleaning, the water level sensor will function correctly for a long time. If it still doesn’t work after cleaning and checking, it will need to be replaced. Another solution to the problem could be calibrating the water level sensor. If it has been misaligned over time or after a DIY cleaning, it might fill the reservoir with too much or too little water, which can also lead to the ice machine not working properly.

Faulty Full Bin Sensor

This sensor is responsible for stopping ice production when the ice bin is full. In most cases, it’s a thermostat located at the top of the ice bin. When the ice touches the sensor, it signals that no more ice needs to be made, halting production until some ice is used, allowing the machine to start making ice again. However, the full bin sensor can sometimes provide incorrect readings. For example, if the ice machine has only produced one-third of the ice, it may mistakenly indicate that the bin is full and stop the ice production. In many commercial ice machines, the full bin sensor is a magnetic sensor that detects when the door for dispensing ice is open. If the door doesn’t close and ice remains in the opening, it means the ice bin is full, and production is paused. If the full bin sensor isn’t working properly or is intermittent, it needs to be replaced to ensure your ice machine operates correctly.
