Washer Won’t Start

Description and Troubleshooting of Problems

Faulty Water Valve

The water valve is one of the first components to start up when you run your washing machine. You can check if water is reaching the machine or not. If both cold and hot water are flowing to the washer but it’s not filling up, the issue is likely with the water valve. This is a common problem across all washer brands. Each water valve has a built-in filter, but even with the filter, small particles can get inside and block it. The real issue isn’t the water valve itself but the dirty water clogging it. Sometimes, the water valve lets water in but not enough. The control board allows a set time for the washer to fill, and if it doesn’t fill in time, depending on the brand, you may see an error on the display or, in older models, the machine might just stop. If the water valve is clogged and isn’t letting enough water through, we recommend replacing it. You can try cleaning the filter inside the water valve, but experience shows that once the filter is clogged, particles have likely already gotten inside the valve. Cleaning it might only give you a few more days or weeks before the issue happens again. Our technicians will check the pressure of both the hot and cold water lines and inspect the water valve for debris and how well it’s functioning. Only after that will we provide the best solution for you. If the water valve needs replacement, our technicians usually carry most parts, so repairs can often be done the same day.

Faulty Water Level

The water level or water pressure switch controls how much water goes into the washing machine. Everything might seem to be working, but if the washer doesn’t detect the water level, it will either display an error code or stop after a certain amount of time. Often, issues with the water level are due to a clogged line that measures the water level inside the machine. There are two types of water level switches: the first type is installed as a separate part, while the second type is built into the control board. After our technicians inspect the water level switch, and if it’s not functioning properly, it will need to be replaced. A malfunctioning water level sensor can lead to overfilling and flooding.

Faulty Motor

When you start the washing machine, the tub spins first to measure the load size. If the motor isn’t working, the machine will stop and show an error (in newer models). This isn’t a common issue because motors are usually long-lasting and rarely fail. However, the motor also has speed sensors and a belt, which could be the reason the drum isn’t spinning. Replacing the speed sensors or belt is less costly than replacing the motor, and in most cases, our technicians have these parts on hand for most washer models, so repairs can be done the same day. After a thorough diagnosis by our technicians, we can determine the exact issue and replace the faulty part. Most brands offer up to a 10-year warranty on motors. If your motor is faulty and still under warranty, we can help you get a new one, and you’ll only need to pay for the installation.

Control Board Is Not Working

The control board is responsible for managing all the functions of your washing machine. It often fails due to power surges, storms, or hurricanes when the power goes out and comes back on. Symptoms can vary widely, from the machine not responding at all to failing to recognize a closed door lock or water level sensor. When a technician examines the control board, there are instances where the issue is simply due to poor connections, and in such cases, we can fix it. However, if a replacement is necessary, we typically do not recommend repairs, as they can take 1-2 weeks, and the cost isn’t significantly lower than purchasing a new one. We suggest repair only if the control board for your model is no longer produced by the manufacturer and there are no alternatives available.

Touchpad Is Not Working

The touchpad is responsible for selecting wash modes and other settings, as well as starting and stopping the washing machine. A common issue with the touchpad is the start button, which can get stuck or wear down due to heavy use, leading to the washer not starting. Another frequent problem can be with the button itself, which has a silicone cover on the back that activates when pressed against the touchpad. Our technicians often perform repairs on-site if the issue can be fixed. If the touchpad or button fails completely, they will need to be replaced. Replacing just the button is significantly cheaper than replacing the entire touchpad. Additionally, repairs can often be done on-site when there are loose connections or clogged pathways on the circuit board.
