A Dryer That Ran but Would Not Turn: One Tampa Job
What the customer reported, what had failed, what was replaced and what it cost.
Samsung dryer, Downtown Tampa: the motor ran and the drum stayed still
| Brand | Samsung dryer |
|---|---|
| Area | Downtown Tampa |
| Complaint | Dryer running, drum not spinning |
| What failed | Seized drum support rollers; worn drive belt |
| Work | Seized drum parts and drive belt replaced; rollers and guides lubricated; full internal maintenance |
| Discount | $30 off for the customer |
| Visits | 1 |
| Total | $239 (parts & labor) |
The complaint. The customer called because the dryer started and made all the right noises, but nothing inside was turning. A drum that does not move while the motor runs is the classic sign of a fault somewhere in the drive.
What the technician found. After the diagnostic: the rollers that carry the drum had seized, so the drum could not rotate however the motor behaved. The drive belt was worn as well.
What was done. The seized drum parts and the worn belt were replaced. The rollers and guides were lubricated, the inside of the dryer was serviced, and the whole job was finished on the same visit. The total was $239, parts and labor, and the customer also received a $30 discount.

How a Dryer Turns, and Where It Stops Turning
The Downtown job was a mechanical fault. Dryer complaints split into two families, a drum that does not move and a drum that moves without heating, and each family points at a different set of parts.
- The chain that turns the drum
- On a belt-driven dryer the motor spins a pulley, one belt loops around the drum, and the drum sits on support rollers. A break anywhere along that chain gives the same complaint: the machine hums and the laundry does not move.
- The belt
- A snapped belt is one cause of a motionless drum. On the Downtown job the belt was worn, but it was not the only fault. The rollers had seized too, and a drum cannot turn on seized rollers whatever belt is on it.
- Rollers and bearings
- Seized rollers can show up first as noise: a squeal, a scrape or a thump once per revolution. On the Tampa job the rollers and guides were lubricated before the dryer was closed up.
- The idler pulley and the motor
- The pulley that keeps the belt tight can wear out its bearing or its spring, and a motor can run without delivering. From the front of the machine both look just like a seized roller, so the cause has to be found by testing and not by guessing.
The Other Half: Dryers That Turn but Do Not Dry
Three complaints that have nothing to do with the drum.
It tumbles, but the clothes stay damp
On an electric dryer the suspects are the heating element, the thermal fuse and the thermostats; on a gas dryer, the igniter, the gas valve coils and the flame sensor. A thermal fuse is a safety device that opens when the dryer overheats; a new fuse does not address why the old one opened.
Nothing happens when you press start
If the display lights up and the dryer stays silent, the door switch is the first thing to test. After that come the start switch, the thermal fuse, the control board, and on a 240-volt machine the breaker, which can trip on one leg and leave the lights on.
It shuts off in the middle of a cycle
An overheat protector can cut the power when the air is not getting out. A blocked vent is the first place to look; a failing thermostat or a door switch that loses contact are next. A dryer that keeps stopping and getting very hot should be switched off until it is looked at.

- The visit itself
- Free when you go ahead with the repair. The $79 service call is charged only if you hear the diagnosis and the price and decide not to proceed.

Dryer Repair in Tampa: Questions We Get
My dryer runs but the drum does not turn. What is wrong?
The drive: a worn or snapped belt, seized support rollers, a tired idler pulley or a motor that spins without delivering. The Samsung we repaired in Downtown Tampa had seized rollers and a worn belt, and both were replaced on one visit for $239, parts and labor.
Do you repair gas dryers as well as electric ones?
Yes, both. An electric dryer that does not heat usually points at the heating element, the thermal fuse or the thermostats. On a gas dryer the same complaint is more likely the igniter, the gas valve coils or the flame sensor.
Why does my dryer start but stop partway through a cycle?
An overheat protector can cut the power when hot air cannot leave the machine. A blocked vent is the first thing to check. A failing thermostat or a door switch that loses contact can do it too.
Do you charge for the service call?
Only if you decide against the repair. When you go ahead the visit is included and you pay for the work. If you hear the diagnosis and the price and decline, the call is $79.
Can you repair a dryer the same day?
The Downtown Tampa job on this page was finished on a single visit. We work from 8 AM to 7 PM, seven days a week, and a part we have to order means a second visit.
Is an older dryer worth repairing?
It depends on the fault and the figure, not on the year. We give you the price before any work begins, and when replacing makes more sense we say so. The decision stays yours.
Where is your Tampa office?
