Four More Fridge Repairs We Closed in St. Petersburg

Whirlpool side-by-side, 36th Ave N: a dead ice maker took out the control board

Appliance: Whirlpool side-by-side with water and ice dispenser, model WRS321SDHZ05, built August 2020 — six years old at the time of the call.

What the customer told us: the ice maker had stopped making ice.

What we found: the ice maker was dead. It did not respond to any test — no reaction at all. Our tech had a new ice maker assembly on the truck, so he installed it and ran the tests again. The new unit did not respond either. The problem was one level up: the main control board was no longer driving the ice maker.

Why it happened: the ice maker had not worked for a long time before we were called. There is a timer module inside the assembly. It failed internally and shorted, and the short went through to the main control board. A dead ice maker is still wired in.

What we did: replaced the ice maker assembly (Whirlpool W11700250, $116). Ordered the main control board (Whirlpool W11196400, $141) — it arrived in two days. Second visit, board installed, tested, refrigerator back to normal. Labor $180.

Total: $437. A comparable new WRS321SDHZ runs $1,500 before tax, and closer to $1,700 once you add tax, delivery and hauling the old unit away. The repair came to under a third of a replacement on a six-year-old fridge — and we said so before ordering the board.

Samsung RF18HFENBSG, 11th Ave NE: ice inside the fridge and water on the floor

Built March 2019. The customer described ice building up inside the fridge and a leak on the floor. That set of symptoms points two ways at once: a blocked drain line, or a defrost system that has stopped clearing the coil. From the outside they look nearly identical — ice building up, the fridge no longer holding temperature properly, often a noise as well.

Here it was the drain line. The unit was heavily iced up, including the air ducts on both the fridge and the freezer side. We cleared the line, tested it, and closed the job on the first visit. Total: $220.

Maytag bottom-freezer, Bay Vista Blvd S: freezer cycling on and off, fridge section fine

Top compartment was working, bottom was not, and the freezer kept switching itself on and off. On the surface this looks like a failing compressor: it runs unevenly, heats up, and shuts down for a while before coming back. It was the start relay — part W10128791.

A bad contact inside the relay is what does it. The compressor overheats, and the overload relay cuts power to protect it. That protection is the on-and-off cycling the customer hears. We had the relay on the truck, replaced it on the first visit, and the compressor ran steady afterwards. Total: $333.88.

Worth knowing, because a compressor is a different order of cost. The next case is exactly that job, and it came to $926.

LG, 65th Ave S: fridge not cooling, freezer not freezing

The customer called with nothing cooling on either side. We booked the same day.

What we found: the compressor was running. It turned, it hummed — but with the gauges on it was not building any pressure. It was not moving refrigerant through the system at all. This is a known failure on LG, common enough that LG itself is aware of it.

What we did: replaced the compressor the next morning, together with the filter dryer. Those two always go together — a new compressor gets a new filter, because a contaminated old one will take the new compressor down with it.

The job itself: unsolder the old compressor, open the sealed system, recover all the refrigerant, flush the system and blow the coils out under pressure, then braze in the new filter dryer and the new compressor. On LG there is one more step the manufacturer requires — reflashing the control board. Newer firmware runs the compressor more efficiently and stretches its life. Then vacuum, recharge, test. Two to two and a half hours on the machine. Afterwards every coil frosted over evenly and the unit held temperature.

Parts (compressor and filter dryer): $586. Total: $926. One thing worth knowing: the replacement compressors LG ships now have the original defect corrected. They run longer than the ones they replace.

This is the big one here. It takes out water valves, water dispensers, ice makers and filter housings. Most of the homes we work in have no whole-house filtration, and the parts in the water path are what pay for it.

Defrost systems

We repair these almost every day. Every fridge defrosts itself every 24 to 48 hours: a heating element under the coil clears the frost so cold air can circulate again. A failed defrost thermostat, defrost timer or temperature sensor stops that. So does a damaged door gasket — warm air gets in, frost builds faster than the system can clear it, and every cycle leaves more behind until the sensors and the heater themselves fail. The heat here makes it worse, and worse again for refrigerators kept in garages, where the air around the unit never cools down.

Storms and power

Range across those ten jobs: $160 to $926. Nine of the ten came in under $440, and the typical job sits around $320. The outlier is sealed-system work — compressor replacement. Diagnostic is $79 and it comes off the bill when you approve the repair.

When a Refrigerator Is Not Worth Repairing

Age is not the criterion, condition is

Older refrigerators often outlast newer ones. On a unit built ten or fifteen years ago the compressor is about the size of a football and runs 12 to 15 years. The compressors going into new refrigerators are half that size with tubing half as thick, and they run 4 to 6 years. Fan motors went the same way: the old ones are metal, twice the size, and last twice as long as the plastic ones used now.

So a fridge past 8 or 10 years that has been reliable and is otherwise sound is worth fixing when the fan motor, water valve, filter housing or ice maker goes. Those are consumables — they will fail on a new unit too.

When we tell you not to repair

It is rarely one fault. The customer calls about one thing, and the full diagnostic turns up more: a compressor making noises that will not last much longer, door gaskets gone, the foam between the inner and outer walls broken down so the outer wall starts frosting over, a refrigerant leak that means replacing half the sealed system, or a unit that was flooded with salt water — the electronics sit at the very bottom.

Built November 2013. The customer called it in himself as a start relay, capacitor or compressor problem. The compressor was not starting. Our tech replaced the start relay on the spot, and the compressor ran and began cooling. After twenty or thirty minutes it was clear the coil was only frosting over 25 to 30% of the way — either a refrigerant leak or a blockage somewhere in the system. On top of that, two gaskets were torn along the bottom and the fan motor was making noise and running in pulses.

All in, the repair would have come to $600–800. A new unit like it costs $600–700. We showed him what we found and told him to buy new. He agreed, thanked us, and paid for the service call and nothing else.

Check This Before You Call a Fridge Repair Tech

Some of our calls end with nothing to repair. These three come up most often:

• No button responds and you cannot change the temperature — the control lock is probably on. It usually takes one or several buttons held down on the panel, and nothing on the display tells you it is engaged.
