The complaint. The dryer had stopped producing heat.
What the technician found. Excessive lint and debris inside the dryer had caused the heating element to fail. The inspection also turned up damaged thermostats and a faulty thermistor, which were part of the same heating problem.
What was done. The element, the three thermostats and the thermistor were replaced. The technician then cleaned the inside of the dryer and cleared the ventilation system, lubricated the drum rollers and ran a full drying cycle. Replacing only the element would have left the lint that destroyed it, so the cleaning was part of the repair and not an extra. The total was $295, parts and labor.

Five Signs a Dryer Should Be Switched Off Until It Is Looked At
Most dryer faults are an inconvenience. These five are the ones where the dryer should stop running first and be diagnosed afterwards.
- A burning smell
- Lint that has reached the heating element or built up in the duct, or a drum bearing that is overheating. Unplug the dryer and do not run it to see whether the smell goes away.
- The cabinet or the door is too hot to touch
